ELIXIR and Toxicology: a community in development

Toxicology has been an active research field for many decades, with academic, industrial and government involvement. Modern omics computational approaches are changing the field, from merely disease-specific observational models into target-specific predictive models. Traditionally, toxicology strong links other fields such as biology, chemistry, pharmacology medicine. With rise of synthetic new engineered materials, alongside ongoing prioritisation needs in chemical risk assessment existing chemicals, early evaluations becoming utmost importance to both scientific regulatory purposes. ELIXIR is intergovernmental organisation that brings together life science resources across Europe. To coordinate linkage various efforts around modern toxicology, establishment a Community seen instrumental. In past few years, joint efforts, building on incidental overlap, have piloted context ELIXIR. For example, EU-ToxRisk, diXa, HeCaToS, transQST, nanotoxicology community worked TeSS, Bioschemas, Compute Platforms activities. 2018, core group interested parties wrote proposal, outlining sketch what this Toxicology would look like. A recent workshop (held September 30th October 1st, 2020) extended roadmap shortlist limited investment-high gain collaborations give body community. This Whitepaper outlines results these defines our vision how it complements activities.
